"In Shanghai, There Are More Planes Than Birds" is a semi-fictional, diary-style work about Burmese migrant workers in China.

In a factory along the China–Myanmar border, a worker from Myanmar once said, “At that moment, I thought—there are perhaps more airplanes in Shanghai than birds.” That afternoon, he had just received news of his mother’s death. Over the course of two months, the author stayed in intermittent contact with these workers, and chose the form of a “diary” to write down their stories. These stories do not belong to a single individual; rather, they reflect shared experiences. Amid China’s “industrial transformation,” the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 coup in Myanmar, and the shift of migration policies, Burmese migrant workers face layered and intersecting difficulties shaped by multiple forces. What this “diary” seeks to portray is their inner worlds as they move through these experiences.
